SHINE Technologies, a fusion technology company, has demonstrated visible Cherenkov radiation produced by fusion for the first time. Normally, fusion has been detected using instruments rather than visible light. The Cherenkov radiation effect was achieved through deuterium-tritium fusion operations at SHINE's main campus, supporting the launch of their FLARE service and isotope production process. The fusion system's target chamber is submerged underwater, allowing for visible Cherenkov radiation generation. The radiation occurs when charged particles move faster than the speed of light in a medium like water, emitting a blue glow. SHINE's achievement provides strong evidence of nuclear processes and demonstrates that fusion can produce neutrons comparable to some reactors. SHINE aims to commercialize fusion energy and plans to deploy eight fusion systems within The Chrysalis, a fusion-driven neutron production facility. The company is also working on scaling its technology to recycle nuclear waste and generate fusion power.
